Llandysul and Pont Tyweli

Llandysul spreads steeply up the hillside above the Teifi, which enters the town in broad meanders and leaves under the town’s bridge as rapids over bed-rock. Over the bridge Pont Tyweli begins, taking its name from the tributary that meets the Teifi a few hundred metres downstream from here.

At the foot of the hill next to the Teifi stands the church of St. Tysul, much of which dates from the 13 th century. St. Tysul was cousin of St David and grandson of Ceredig, the 5 th century migrant to this part of Wales that now bears his name A stone church was built on the foundations of St. Tysul’s 6 th century place of worship, which would have been of wattle and daub. It contains an ancient alter stone in its chapel – an important relic of Early Christianity in Wales – which was found nearby at Coedfoel and brought to the church. Up from the church, steep lanes lead to the main street, which slopes gentle down towards the bridge and Pont Tyweli. The Victorian and Edwardian architecture and numerous small shops of the High Street make it a nice place for a stroll, and there are good views of the valley to be had from the roads that lead further up the hill.

Walks:

1) Starting at the bridge, a well-made path extends along the North bank of the river for a few hundred metres. Although only a short stretch, the path gives interesting views of the riverside buildings opposite and the rapids. There is a picnic site half way along and an information board at the beginning of the path.

Suitable for wheelchair and pushchair access (although the surface is gravely).

Parking: Car park a few hundred metres past St. Tysul’s at the bottom of the town (see red shading on map)

Facilities: shops, leisure centre, cafes, pubs, public toilets next to car park.
