Rock Mill, Capel Dewi

Built in the 1890s and run continuously by one family, Rock Mill is the only waterwheel-powered commercial woollen mill still working in Wales. The mill sits in the narrow valley of Afon Clettwr, which is a tributary of the Teifi. Looking downstream from the road bridge you can see the mill’s leat channelling water on its way to the double cast iron overshot waterwheel, which has powered the mill’s machinery since its establishment.

The mill is open to the public from Easter to the end of October (weekdays: 10am – 5pm, Saturday: 10am-1pm) and entrance costs £2 for adults, £1 for children, and is free for under 5s.

The shop here sells weaving and knit-ware including throws, blankets, scarves, shawls and rugs made from the yarn produced at the mill.

Getting there: Capel Dewi is approximately 4km (2 ½ miles) east-north-east of Llandysul. Rock Mill is sign-posted in the village. By car, from the A485 ( Carmarthen – Lampeter road) turn off at Llanllwni and follow signs; from the north, turn south from the A475 at Rhydowen.
